Bear and Hare are an adorable pair, and in this instalment of Emily Gravett’s charming series, Bear and Hair try their hands (er, paws) at fishing!
Bear is less than successful, reeling in pretty much everything but fish, but he doesn’t give up, and his patience is eventually rewarded with a mighty catch. Gravett conveys her “if at first you don’t succeed…” message in a sweet, gentle and understated way that never comes across as preachy or heavy handed.
The sparse text is perfect for emergent readers or language learners, and pairs beautifully with the illustrations to create a title that is accessible without being babyish.
Hilariously, I shared this picture book with three preschool / daycare groups, and there’s a scene in which Bear accidentally catches a rollerskate. NONE of the children had ever seen a roller skate before, and they had no idea what it was, or what it was for! I clearly remember getting a pair of rollerskates for my birthday as a child – not rollerblades, mind you, but actual rollerskates. As much as I love working with small children, each and every day seems to bring a new reminder of how very old I am…
Enjoy this sweet, gentle British import, ideal for toddlers and preschoolers!
