Jasmine Toguchi, Chapter Book Star!

jasmine

Eight-year-old Jasmine Toguchi is a flamingo fan, tree climber, and top-notch mess-maker!

She’s also tired of her big sister, Sophie, always getting to do things first. For once, Jasmine wishes SHE could do something before Sophiesomething special, something different. The New Year approaches, and as the Toguchi family gathers in Los Angeles to celebrate, Jasmine is jealous that her sister gets to help roll mochi balls by hand with the women. Her mom says that Jasmine is still too young to join in, so she hatches a plan to help the men pound the mochi rice instead. Surely her sister has never done THAT before.

But pounding mochi is traditionally reserved for boys. And the mochi hammer is heavier than it looks. Can Jasmine build her case and her mochi-making muscles in time for New Year’s Day?

Jasmine Toguchi is the star of a new early chapter book series that I just can’t wait to share with young readers. Jasmine is sweet and spunky, and though her big ideas sometimes get her into sticky situations, she always manages to make things right again, thanks to her big heart and her kind, supportive network of family and friends.

It’s so important that diverse stories be shared with readers of all ages, and made available at all reading levels. Jasmine is proud of her Japanese heritage, which she shares with series creator Debbi Michiko Florence. In the first book in the series, readers are introduced to traditional Japanese new year’s celebrations, including the making of mochi balls. Jasmine loves her family’s traditions, but that doesn’t stop her from putting her own unique spin on things, like challenging an old tradition that says only boys can pound the mochi. When Jasmine puts her mind to something, she doesn’t let anything get in her way! In another book, Jasmine Toguchi, Super Sleuth, Jasmine and her sister and mother and best friend celebrate Girl’s Day, another Japanese cultural celebration. Jasmine doesn’t speak Japanese, but she’s still very aware and proud of her heritage, and she’s always very happy to introduce others to her family’s traditions and celebrations.

Jasmine has a great family, filled with loving people who don’t always get along (her sister is growing up, which confuses and frustrates Jasmine to no end), but who always love and support each other.

Feisty, fun, sweet and charming, Jasmine Toguchi is a fabulous new character that young readers are sure to fall in love with!
