Mighty Jack and the Goblin King is the very exciting follow up to last year’s Mighty Jack which introduced us to Jack, his sister, Maddy, and his neighbour, Lilly. The story picks up where it left off with Maddy kidnapped by an ogre and Lilly and Jack hot on their trail.
The reader follows Jack and Lilly through the portal to see the ogre with Maddy in his arms disappearing into a tower fortress. Lilly is separated from Jack when she falls off the green bridge to the tower and finds herself in the midst of goblins who seem mostly sweet except for their horrible king who wants to do with Lilly what every despot king wants to do with a young female…marry her. Lilly’s not about to be wed so easily though.
Jack, on the other hand, finds a way into the castle and finds the ogres (yes, there is more than one) cooking up nefarious plans for Maddy. A metallic beast is involved and the word “sacrifice” is casually bandied around.
Mighty Jack and the Goblin King is a fast paced adventure with some incredible twists that will get any heroine roaring with pleasure. The art is fantastic (it is Ben Hatke, after all) and the story is heartwarming in Hatke’s signature style. This is a delicious installment in the series and I hope there are many books in store for us.
