With the way the world is going, it might not be an exaggeration to say that the only glimpses future generations will have of wild animals will be in books and recordings or perhaps highly exclusive zoos. National Geographic kids has used Joel Sartore’s pictures and Kwame Alexander’s words to create a volume that invites children to marvel at the diversity and wonder that exists in the natural world.

Kwame Alexander is a super star and his words are, as expected, excellent. Joel Sartore’s photographs are just as incredible. Sartore is the creator of the Photo Ark which collects photographs of animals–his afterword is both heartfelt and necessary.

As Kwame Alexander writes, “our actions matter” and it is never too early to teach your kids to be environmentalists because this is, after all, the world they will live in. It is important to forge a connection between a child and the animals they share space with–no matter how isolated we have made ourselves sequestered in cities and urban areas with nature scrubbed back.

I highly recommend this collection with its beautiful pictures and beautiful words. This will be an invaluable addition to any library and classroom.
