Isabelle Arsenault’s Colette’s Lost Pet is an ode to the imagination and the willingness of children to accept and adopt. Colette has moved to a new neighbourhood where she knows no one and no one knows her. Her mother won’t let her get a pet and Colette really wants one. When Colette meets a little friend in the neighbourhood, she tells him she has lost her pet, a bird. She tells him that it has flown away so he takes her off an journey throughout the neighbourhood, recruiting friends along the way.

Colette’s lost pet gains colours, names, and qualities with each new kid she meets. At the end of day when Colette’ lie might come to light, she finds that her new friends probably already knew that her pet wasn’t real. They were just willing to play, imagine her pet as she did.

The art is beautiful and the story whimsical. Yes, sticklers for truth will say that lying is wrong but at the same time, Colette’s vulnerability takes away the sting of it. I enjoyed being immersed in Colette’s world and could almost hear the shrieks of laughter that characterized my childhood.

I would recommend this for children everywhere.
